EMJI SPERO PERFORMS
ALMOST ANY SHIT WILL DO
AT JOHANSSON PROJECTS
11 APRIL 2014

Before the performance, Kevin Laird and I had set up a vocal mic, and had taped a contact mic to the ground, running both through a loop pedal and an amp. Once the audience filtered in, I began the reading from the beginning of Almost Any Shit Will Do. This continuity was interrupted when the body of the artist collapsed, striking the ground near the contact mic. I got back up, gathered myself, opened the book at random, and began to read over the looping sound of a body hitting the ground. This pattern—the attempt to read and the interruption by the body’s collapse—continued, building up into a dense thwacking rhythm. I let the cacophony surge, layering certain phrases into the loop while reading. Eventually I lowered myself to the floor and lay facing the ceiling, vocal mic in my mouth, breathing into the loop, drowning out all language.
